Do you need a Google Business listing to appear in ChatGPT?

Published on

Nothing shows that a Google Business listing helps you appear in ChatGPT. No OpenAI documentation mentions it, and in July 2026, OpenAI signed an agreement with Yelp, not Google, for its local responses. We measured this in France: on local searches queried to ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, not a single citation linked back to Google Maps or a Google listing. Instead, ChatGPT cited business websites, directories like PagesJaunes, and national networks. The Google listing remains useful, but for Google and Google Maps.

For what type of question? It all depends on the tool. For a local search in Google or Google Maps, the Google Business listing is a documented lever. For ChatGPT, nothing shows that it is used. For Gemini, which relies on Google Maps data, it matters more.

Where the advice comes from, and what studies say

The advice "optimize your Google listing to appear in ChatGPT" circulates mainly on agency blogs, without any supporting measurements. Measured studies say otherwise. Whitespark, a local SEO tool publisher, wrote in September 2025 that it did not see Google listing results in ChatGPT, and pointed out that ChatGPT historically relies on Bing for web search and on Bing Places for its local results, with no exclusivity.

Since then, the landscape has changed. In July 2026, OpenAI signed a non-exclusive agreement with Yelp, giving ChatGPT access to Yelp business reviews, ratings, photos, and information for local searches. In August 2026, Steady Demand measured in the United States that business listings displayed by ChatGPT carried a Yelp link in 95.83% of cases, and that businesses named by ChatGPT only overlapped with Google's on average by 7.5%.

What we measured in France

None of these studies cover France. On September 16, 2026, we asked ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, via their web-search-enabled APIs, local questions as a customer would ask them, covering several professions and several cities: a plumber in Périgueux, an Italian restaurant in Lyon, a chartered accountant in Rennes, a garage in Angers, a dentist in Tours, a real estate agency in Annecy, an electric bike repairer in Bordeaux, an electrician in Quimper. Before the data collection, we had written down our predictions and the list of directories to recognize.

Result: not a single citation from any of the three AIs linked back to Google Maps or a Google listing. ChatGPT cited local business websites for 29% of its citations, directories and platforms for 31%, including PagesJaunes, MeilleursAgents, and the Guide Michelin, national networks for 24%, and official sources for 13%. Yelp did not appear in any of the responses obtained through the API.

What ChatGPT did to find an electrician in Quimper

On the question of the electrician in Quimper, ChatGPT first searched in certified professional directories, Qualifelec and eco-friendly certified craftsmen (RGE), then it ran a search for each business found, using its name, city, and the words "reviews", "address", or "website". One of its searches even asked for "Google reviews" of a business. In the end, it cited the websites of three electricians, a PagesJaunes listing, the France Rénov' directory, and official sources on electrical compliance.

This path shows what matters for ChatGPT locally: being listed in the directories it consults, then having a website that it can find by the business name. Even when it looks for Google reviews, it cites web pages, not the listing itself.

What the Google listing is actually used for

For Google, the listing is a documented lever. Google explains that its local ranking is based on the listing's relevance to the search, distance, and the prominence of the establishment, and that it is impossible to pay to be better ranked. Its help page, however, mentions neither AI Overviews nor AI Mode.

For Gemini, the listing matters more. The 2026 SOCi report, on multi-location brand establishments in the United States, measured 100% accurate business information in Gemini, which relies on Google Maps, compared to about 68% in ChatGPT. Yet, via its API, Gemini did not cite any Google listings for us: it cited web pages, with PagesJaunes at the top of the list.

What this changes for a business

Keep your Google listing up to date: it serves Google, Google Maps, and probably Gemini. But do not rely on it for ChatGPT. For it, the observed levers are elsewhere: a clean website that names your profession and your city, a presence in the directories and platforms of your sector, such as PagesJaunes, Doctolib, or MeilleursAgents, and consistent information from one source to another.

For companies that also target an American clientele, a complete Yelp listing can become an entry point into ChatGPT since the July 2026 agreement. In France, our responses obtained through the API do not yet show Yelp.

What we do not know

Our measurement covers one question per profession and per city, via the models' API: the ChatGPT application displays business listings and maps that the API does not return. The classification of sources as local business, platform, or network was done by hand after collection. The studies on Yelp, Bing Places, and SOCi focus on the United States.
